Walgreens is closing five stores in San Francisco, California, next month after a rash of retail thefts. “Due to ongoing organized retail crime, we have made the difficult decision to close five stores across San Francisco,” Walgreens announced on Tuesday. “Organized retail crime continues to be a challenge facing retailers across San Francisco, and we are not immune to that,” said Walgreens spokesman Phil Caruso. “Retail theft across our San Francisco stores has continued to increase in the past few months to five times our chain average. During this time to help combat this issue, we increased our investments in security measures in stores across the city to 46 times our chain average in an effort to provide a safe environment.” “I am completely devastated by this news — this Walgreens is less than a mile from seven schools and has been a staple for seniors, families and children for decades,” said San Francisco Supervisor Ahsha Safai in a Twitter thread posted Tuesday afternoon. “This closure will significantly impact this community.” “The City needs to act with a sense of urgency to reduce and deter the number of incidents of commercial retail theft,” he wrote.
Today the judge enforcing Alberta’s pandemic lockdown laws sentenced Pastor Artur Pawlowski. His crime? No crime — he simply opened his church during the lockdown. In a bizarre, 40-minute rant, Justice Adam Germain ordered that for the next 18 months, whenever Pastor Artur talks about lockdowns, the pandemic or vaccines — in tweets, in speeches, in media interviews — he must immediately repudiate himself, and give the “official” government view condemning himself. He must argue against himself. He must condemn himself. Or go back to jail. It’s compelled speech, like a Maoist “struggle session” in Communist China. You have to say what the government tells you to say. Forced speech is unheard of in Canadian law. Even convicted murderers cannot be ordered to apologize for their crimes — and anyways, such a forced apology would be meaningless. But a convicted pastor must now violate his own conscience and repeat an angry judge’s talking points, or face prison. That’s the whole point of it: this judge wants Pastor Artur to submit, to acknowledge the government as his master. And if he can’t convince Pastor Artur of that voluntarily, he’ll force him to say it. It’s like forcing him to kneel. Which the police have already done.
The United Kingdom plans to pass legislation that will see EV home and workplace chargers being switched off at peak times to avoid blackouts. Announced by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, the proposed law stipulates that electric car chargers installed at home or at the workplace may not function for up to nine hours a day to avoid overloading the national electricity grid. As of May 30, 2022, new home and workplace chargers being installed must be “smart” chargers connected to the internet and able to employ pre-sets limiting their ability to function from 8 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 10 pm. However, users of home chargers will be able to override the pre-sets should they need to, although it’s not clear how often they will be able to do that. In addition to the nine hours a day of downtime, authorities will be able to impose a “randomized delay” of 30 minutes on individual chargers in certain areas to prevent grid spikes at other times. The UK government believes these measures will help avoid putting the electricity grid under stress at times of peak demand, potentially preventing blackouts. Public and rapid chargers on motorways and A-roads will be exempt, though.
On June 22, Scott Smith was arrested at a Loudoun County, Virginia, school board meeting, a meeting that was ultimately deemed an “unlawful assembly” after many attendees vocally opposed a policy on transgender students. What people did not know is that weeks prior on May 28, Smith says, a boy allegedly wearing a skirt entered a girls’ bathroom at nearby Stone Bridge High School, where he sexually assaulted Smith’s ninth-grade daughter. Juvenile records are sealed, but Smith’s attorney Elizabeth Lancaster told The Daily Wire that a boy was charged with two counts of forcible sodomy, one count of anal sodomy, and one count of forcible fellatio, related to an incident that day at that school. As a result of the viral video showing his arrest, Smith became the poster child for what the National School Boards Association has since suggested could be a form of “domestic terrorism”: a white blue-collar male who showed up to harangue obscure public servants on his local school board. “If someone would have sat and listened for thirty seconds to what Scott had to say, they would have been mortified and heartbroken,” Lancaster said.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki blamed the American public during a press conference on Friday for President Joe Biden’s declining poll numbers, claiming that the 20 percent of the population who have not gotten vaccinated have thrown a wrench into Biden’s success. “The President has very tough approval ratings these days,” a reporter said. “What do you make of these really terrible polls? Are they that he’s doing something wrong? Is it just the communication? Or is it he’s doing unpopular things that have to be done? Or something else?” “Well, look, I would say that this is a really tough time in our country. We’re still battling COVID, and a lot of people thought we’d be through it, including us,” Psaki responded. “And we — because of the rise of the Delta variant, because of the fact that even though it was a vaccine that was approved under a Republican administration, even though we now have full FDA approval, and even though it’s widely available across the country, we still have a quarter of the country who have — less than that — 20 percent of the country who’ve decided not to get vaccinated. No question that’s having an impact.”
Affluent westerners are so taken with the way their lockdowns are “saving lives,” that they ignore completely the costs those lockdowns impose on those less wealthy than they are. In America, these policies have been an economic hardship for innumerable. In the Third World, the destruction has been infinitely worse, with Madagascar as a microcosm of that disaster. […] Pro tip: When there are two sides to an argument, and one side wants to compare costs and benefits, while the other side sees it as a simple moral question—with the only question being “do you want people to suffer, or not?”—the first side is usually in the right. This goes for single-payer health care, “non-violent policing,” Covid lockdowns, and a whole host of other matters as to which the Left has discarded common sense in favor of ideological purity. The more reasonable half of the American populace knows that, for most people, going a year or two without steady work is a bigger threat to their well-being than a mild respiratory virus whose average victim is older than the national life expectancy.
