Ontario closing 26 youth jails: Government source

Ontario is closing 26 youth justice facilities — a cost-saving measure following multiple auditor general reports highlighting the large number of empty open and secure custody beds. “By increasing utilization at our remaining facilities we will be able to improve the services we offer youth while saving more than $39.9 million annually, so that’s funding we know can be better utilized to support people including through COVID-19 recovery programs as well,” a government source told the Toronto Sun on Monday.
