As the World Series gets underway this week, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on Thursday called on Major League Baseball (MLB) to retire the term “bullpen” and start using a more “animal-friendly” term. In a pun-ridden statement, PETA “pitched” the idea to MLB. “As the World Series turns into a pitching duel, PETA is pitching a proposal to the baseball world,” PETA said. “Strike out the word ‘bullpen,’ which references the holding area where terrified bulls are kept before slaughter, in favor of a more modern, animal-friendly term.” “PETA’s suggestion? The arm barn!” the group said. The animal rights group argued that the baseball “bullpen,” where pitchers warm up before pitching during a game, references the area at rodeos where bulls are held before they are slaughtered. PETA said that “in rodeos, gentle bulls are tormented into kicking and bucking by being electro-shocked or prodded—all are typically held in a ‘bullpen’ while they await their cruel fate.” “Bullpen” has “speciesist roots & we can do better than that,” PETA said in a tweet Thursday. “Switching to ‘arm barn’ would be a home run for baseball fans, players, and animals.”
Strange & Weird
A Miami influencer who was criticized for posing in front of her dad’s coffin defended the morbid photo op, claiming that her decision to stage the pics would have been one her “father would have approved with had he still been alive.” Jayne Rivera, a 20-year-old fitness model, admitted that she “understood the negative reaction,” but insisted that there was nothing “wrong” with sharing the images of her father Jose Antonio Rivera’s open casket to Instagram, NBC News reported. He died earlier in the month. “There is nothing wrong with what I posted, and I stand by that,” she told the outlet. She said the images of her posing in a black, tight-fitting outfit with the coffin, which was adorned with an American flag, were done “with the best intentions in a manner my father would have approved with had he still been alive.” “Everyone handles the loss of a loved one in their own ways; some are more traditional while others might come across as taboo,” she said. “For me, I treated the celebration as if my father was right next to me, posing for the camera as he had done on many occasions prior.”
“It is Jewish genius that has helped… to weaponize the weed.” Wesley Muhammad believes that the U.S. government and the Jews are using marijuana to make black men gay. The “Pot Plot” is a popular theory in Muhammad’s Nation of Islam cult. At the Saviours Day Convention in Chicago, an official Nation of Islam event, Wesley Muhammad claimed that, “It is Jewish genius that has helped… to weaponize the weed so that it may effeminize the black male of America. And be clear, it is Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam that is standing in between the total demasculinization of the black man in America.” Some years back, Wesley Muhammad’s lecture, “How to Make a Homosexual: The Scientific Assault on Black America” was canceled at a Philly black beauty expo because of its hateful content. But what wasn’t good enough for the 23rd Annual International Locks Conference, a black natural hair expo, is unfortunately all too welcome at San Francisco State University. It’s not too surprising that a black “wholistic” hair expo has higher standards than the most antisemitic university in America. Or that Muhammad fits in so well at SFSU.
In the event of war, DO NOT call sensitive rich kid Peter Fray-Witzer. The student at US$80,000-per-year woke nirvana Oberlin College in Ohio penned an op-ed in the student newspaper declaring his outrage and that he was “angry, scared and confused.” The reason? “Cisgender men” installed a radiator in his dormitory that is labelled a “safe space.” In fact, he asked if he could be exempt and felt “mildly violated” when the contractors showed up. Made-for-mockery Fray-Witzer said in his op-ed he is “very averse to people entering my personal space.” His dorm is known as the “home of the Women and Trans Collective.” He wrote: “This anxiety was compounded by the fact that the crew would be strangers, and they were more than likely to be cisgender men. I was angry, scared and confused. Why didn’t the college complete the installation over the summer when the building was empty?” As those awful minutes ticked by, our hero notes he “waited apprehensively.” “The workers began installing in common spaces, and I could see immediately that they were all men,” Fray-Witzer wrote, adding that “other students shared my concerns.” Our brave hero was roundly mocked on social media. Journalist Glenn Greenwald summed things up.
A theme park worker who operated the rides has revealed the worst things that ever happened while on the job — including a guest who had diarrhea on the rollercoaster. In a thread on Reddit called “Amusement park employees of Reddit, what is your horror story?”, staff shared the worst moments from their jobs. One person said that during a particularly hot day that he was operating a ride, one person had pooed all over one of the seats. “I operated a few different roller coasters during my fun-filled summers at this amusement park, but most of my horror stories come from one ride in particular. The train was one of the ones that you had to step into, with a lap bar restraint. Another staff worker was called to a similar problem at a haunted house. They wrote: “I got a complaint about a really bad smell in there and had the roamed try to find it. It turns out someone had smeared s*** on the mirrors and floor of the room, literal human s***. And people had been crawling in it. “Getting it on their clothes, and spreading it throughout the apparatus. We had to close the attraction down.” One of the biggest problems they face is people trying to get on rides when they are too small or too big.
A group of hippos — an unwanted legacy following the death of notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar — are being sterilised. Escobar, who was shot dead by police in 1993, illegally imported exotic animals, including a male and a female hippo — dubbed the “cocaine hippos”. Since then, a growing population has been taking over the countryside near his former ranch, Hacienda Nápoles. The Colombian government has so far sterilised 24 of more than 80 animals. They have been treated with a chemical that will make them infertile. Colombian environmentalists say the hippos, believed to be the biggest herd outside Africa, are an invasive species and have pushed away the native fauna. Many have campaigned for the animals to be culled or sterilised. Back in 1993, when authorities seized Hacienda Nápoles — Escobar’s luxury estate situated about 250km (155 miles) north-west of the capital Bogotá — most of the animals found there were distributed to zoos across the country. But not the hippos. “It was logistically difficult to move them around, so the authorities just left them there, probably thinking the animals would die,” Colombian biologist Nataly Castelblanco told the BBC earlier this year.
