Breaking: Trudeau walks back minister’s comments, will not recognize Taliban as legitimate government

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau walked back comments made yesterday by Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau, saying that Canada officially has “no plans to recognize” the hostile Taliban regime as the official government of Afghanistan. When they were in government 20 years ago, Canada did not recognize them as a government. They have taken over and replaced a duly-elected democratic government by force, and… are a recognized terror organization by Canadian law,” said Trudeau, adding that pressure would be put on the group by Canada and its international allies. During Monday’s CBC Power and Politics, Foreign Affairs Minister Garneau could not definitively answer whether the Liberals would support a Taliban-led Afghanistan. When asked if Canada would refuse to recognize a Taliban government, Garneau said: “Right now, it is early days. We want to see what happens.”
