With more than five million Canadians still working from home, offices across the country have become dark and lonely places. In Calgary, the COVID-19 pandemic has made a serious downtown office vacancy problem worse. “It’s unbelievably bad. I feel like I’ve said over the last number of years, it’s unbelievably bad,” said Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi. According to a recent report by real estate company Avison Young, Calgary’s downtown office vacancy rate hit a record high of 26.9 per cent in the last quarter of 2020. The company projects that the rate will soon rise to more than 30 per cent.
