Becoming a ‘show me your papers’ society would be antithetical to the idea of freedom and privacy we claim to value in this country. With continued chatter about vaccine passports, it is essential that we push back against that idea. When you hear the term, there’s a good chance it reminds of you something we would expect in authoritarian nations, and there’s a good reason for that. Widespread vaccine passports would transform Canada into a ‘show me your papers’ society, further expanding the draconian power government possesses. And it is being made clear by the government that the idea is still on the table: “Health Minister Patty Hajdu says the government “remains committed to having the conversations with international partners” about a vaccine passport #cdnpoli” Additionally, the Ontario government is considering what they call ‘immunity certificates’ – vaccine passports by another name: “The Ontario government considered plans to issue digital “immunity certificates” to people as they received their COVID-19 vaccinations, handing them a pass that could be stored on their smartphone and potentially checked by long-term care home attendants, employers or airline staff.
