After Trudeau & EU Leader Speak, Canada Still Appears To Have No Assurance On Vaccine Exports

Readout of call seems to be vague, without clear commitments. Justin Trudeau spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, yet Canada still appears to have no guarantee on vaccine exports. With growing concerns that Canada’s vaccine shipments could be held back by both the European Union and India – upon whom Canada has become wholly reliant for vaccines – Trudeau was unable to secure what many other countries already have – an ironclad guarantee that shipments will be delivered. Instead, readouts of the discussion appear to be vague, with the PMO saying the two “agreed on the importance of rolling out safe and effective vaccines as quickly as possible, including with respect to continued close Canada-EU cooperation,” and von der Leyen saying she and Trudeau had a “good discussion.”
