Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is being urged to move Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland into a new portfolio and give her additional powers by naming her deputy prime minister. The idea has been discussed behind closed doors, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks. However, sources close to Freeland say she enjoys her role as Foreign Affairs Minister, and that moving her out of the job could come with challenges. Trudeau will unveil his new cabinet next Wednesday, with the source saying Canadians should expect some big changes.

The Belleville, Ont., chapter of the Knights of Columbus has erected a monument “in memory of all victims of abortion” at a local cemetery. According to the Catholic fraternal organization’s Facebook page, the gravestone-like monument at St. James Cemetery was erected Nov. 2. Inscribed with the phrases “life is sacred” and “unborn lives matter,” as well as a quotation from the Bible, the polished black stone also bears an image of a fetus in the womb. CBC reached out to the Knights of Columbus Belleville council but did not receive a reply. A Facebook photo showing a group of men and boys posing beside the gravestone has received more than 1,000 comments, both for and against the gesture.

Parliament’s budget watchdog warns that rougher economic waters will mean a deeper federal deficit,with no certainty on how much deeper.In a report Thursday, the parliamentary budget office downgraded its outlook for the country’s economy compared to its projections from June, citing weaker exports because of ongoing trade dispute between the world’s 2 biggest economies the United States & China & increasing protectionism around the world.Also factored into the downward economic outlook are spending cuts by Premier Jason Kenney’s govt in Alberta amid lower spending across all govts in Canada, which the PBO expects will hit some of the lowest levels since 2008, in the worst of the global financial crisis.The budget office’s report predicts the economic slowing will deepen the annual deficit by $1.6 billion.

Canadian National Railway Co. has confirmed that it is cutting jobs as freight volumes and revenue continue to fall amid a weakening North American economy.The company said in a statement that it will be “adjusting its resources to demand,” which means it will be placing some workers on leave and “reducing both management and union job numbers.”The process of reducing staff has already started, the company said.CN employs around 24,000 people across a rail network that spans Canada and parts of the United States.In September, Canadian National Railway Co.’s chief financial officer said that the company’s freight volumes and revenue had been hurt by the global economy slipping, as well as the U.S.-China trade war.

LONDON — Britain’s Prince Andrew said in comments broadcast on Friday that he had no recollection of ever meeting an American woman who alleges she was forced to have sex with him when she was underage. Andrew also told BBC television that he had “let the side down” by staying with U.S. financier Jeffrey Epstein after Epstein’s conviction for paying a teenage girl for sex. One of Epstein’s accusers, Virginia Giuffre, has said she was forced to have sex with Andrew in London, New York and on a private Caribbean island between 1999 and 2002, when she says Epstein kept her as a “sex slave.”

Canada Revenue Agency reports 14% of Canadians never heard of carbon tax rebates despite heavy promotion by the federal government prior to last month’s election. This according to an in-house report done by CRA, according to Blackstocks Reporter, in which taxpayers in five provinces were asked: “Have you heard anything lately about the Climate Action Incentive Payment? Another 45% said they had heard of it but didn’t know any details.

A 68-year-old man who volunteered for the Scouts program in the 1990s faces charges after two women accused him of multiple sex attacks. Toronto Police say the first woman came forward Oct. 30, claiming the suspect had sexually assaulted her more than once. During the investigation, another woman came forward with similar claims, police said in a statement released Friday. Leo Reid, of Oshawa, was arrested Tuesday.

Toronto Police were looking for yet another “elopee” from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Friday. Police are asking for the public’s help in finding Daniel Kent, 47, who was last seen in the Queen St. W, and Ossington Ave. area around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. He is described as 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, with brown eyes, light brown hair and a beard. He also uses two canes to help him walk.
