Opinion: The enormity of the horror of Auschwitz transcends our ability to imagine what happened there

Luba, Sara and Chaya were three sisters who enjoyed their childhood in the town of Pabianice, Poland. That’s them in photos from the early 1930s, with Luba and Sara dressed in costumes for Purim — the holiday that celebrates a thwarted genocide against the Jews in ancient Persia. A few pictures are all that’s left to imagine what their lives were like before the Second World War, when they were sent to the Auschwitz death camp as young women and robbed of the rest of their lives.
