Elizabeth May has posted on Twitter a call for the shut down of the entire fossil fuel sector: “Just voted for a bill for government help shut down oil and gas wells. We need to shut down the whole fossil fuel sector. The bill needs some work in committee but it is moving in the right direction. Money to shut down industry is not a subsidy.” Of course, given that demand for oil will remain high at least until 2050 – with many parts of the world (including India and Africa) expecting large-scale economic growth and higher demand for petroleum products – May’s comment makes no economic sense. Furthermore, it would be devastating to Canada, with the energy sector being one of the largest contributors to our economy, including generating the wealth that governments tax to fund infrastructure and social programs.
