BONOKOSKI: The movement to defend Sir John A. Macdonald’s legacy
The Macdonald-Laurier Institute, a non-partisan think tank of high regard, is now on a personal mission to salvage the legacy and defend the name of one of its namesakes — Sir John A. Macdonald. And a goodly number of pretty heavy hitters are putting the names to the document of defence, some 200 historians, policy experts, educators, business leaders, public figures and thought leaders. Over the last couple of years, Macdonald’s name has been taking a beating, with his critics wanting his statues destroyed — anything to remove him from positive public thought right down to having pubs carrying his name to lance it from their marquees. It’s been some pretty hostile stuff.
