BONOKOSKI: Former envoy McCallum speaks of China’s intransigence


If Canada’s ousted ambassador to China John McCallum is to be believed, the Chinese dictatorship of Xi Jinping couldn’t care less if the jail conditions of the Two Michaels are deplorable. McCallum — the former longtime Liberal cabinet minister who was fired as Canada’s envoy to China in January 2019 — was testifying last week before the special House of Commons committee on Canada’s icy relations with China and stated he was one of very few to visit jailed Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, guilty of being only in the wrong place at the right time.
