Expensive chairs, fancy desks and lots of computers bought for federal workers to stay at home

A sit-stand desk for $1,368, an ergonomic chair for $600, a left-handed mouse for $209: These are just some of the items the federal government paid for as they asked workers to do their jobs from home during the pandemic. An incomplete tally of more than $30 million to provide civil servants with at-home office furniture and equipment was presented to Parliament this week. The feds offered workers the choice of having office equipment such as desks and chairs delivered to the employees’ home, or a $500 grant for the worker to buy their own. Given the sums in the documents tabled in Parliament, Canadians should hope most took the grant.
