California on Thursday became the second state after Texas to surpass 1 million confirmed coronavirus cases, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The Golden State has recorded at least 1,000,631 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 18,126 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, the data shows. The morbid milestone comes nearly 10 months after the first coronavirus cases were confirmed in California, the country’s most populous state with 40 million residents. Gov. Gavin Newsom issued the nation’s first statewide stay-at-home order on March 19, shuttering businesses and schools to try to stem the spread of the virus and prevent hospitals from becoming overcrowded.
