Hospital workers walk out in Calgary, across province to protest UCP policies

Hospital workers in Calgary joined colleagues across Alberta in a wildcat strike targeting UCP policies on Monday, prompting the postponement of non-urgent surgeries and threats of discipline. The walkouts — involving about 150 staff at the Foothills Medical Centre and 100 at the South Health Campus, as well as the Peter Lougheed hospital — were not ordered or organized by the union, an AUPE official said, but were a grassroots show of defiance. The absence of the workers, combined with medical staff in COVID-19 isolation, could impact patient care, said Alberta Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw, who added she’s confident AHS can handle the developing situation. In a memo sent to staff Monday, the AHS said those participating in the walk-out will be disciplined and shown no amnesty.
