Edmonton’s redefined wards for the 2021 municipal election will be getting new names with 12 recommended Indigenous titles being voted on by city council Monday. Soon after council asked for the city’s naming committee to find Indigenous place names for the wards, an Indigenous naming committee of 17 women was formed, representing communities from Treaty 6, 7, 8 as well as Métis and Inuit representatives. When the proposed new ward boundaries were first discussed, direction was given to rename them by geographic area so residents wouldn’t be confused by keeping the numbering system currently in place. But this changed after a push from local Indigenous communities to honour the history and culture of the land where Edmonton is now formed.
