Open letter calls for UCP to continue ‘life-saving’ opioid dependency program

“The guidelines are clear: iOAT is a necessary treatment option for individuals with severe injection opioid use disorders that have not responded to other treatments,” said the letter. “Benefits demonstrated through scientific study include reduced illicit opioid use, improved retention in treatment and health care, reduced criminal involvement and incarceration, reduced mortality, and improved overall health and social functioning.” They also highlighted studies in Europe and Canada that pointed to the cost-effectiveness of iOAT programs given “reductions in criminal activity and hospitalizations with their associated costs.” Buick said it costs about $148,000 per individual accessing iOAT.
