The Prime Minister’s Office is getting its retaliation in early when it comes to criticism of its pandemic recovery plan. On Thursday, Mike McNair, a senior adviser to Justin Trudeau, took to Twitter to justify the spate of new spending expected to come later this fall in the economic update from new Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. “Austerity shrinks the economy further, costs jobs and is out of step with global reality,” McNair said. But as Goldy Hyder, president of the Business Council of Canada, pointed out in reply, that’s a false dichotomy. “The choice is not spending or austerity. The issue is how much should be spent. Are there limits?” he asked. The answer to that question is no, there are not.
