We need to phase out Ontario’s gas-fired power plants, not ramp them up

The daily count of COVID-19 cases and wall-to-wall coverage of the economic fallout from the pandemic has tended to blind us to a troubling reality: we have an even bigger problem on our hands, and it has not gone away. I refer, of course, to the climate crisis. With the world setting a new temperature record in July, the trendline for the climate is looking even bleaker than the trendline for COVID-19. That’s why it is so troubling that Ontario’s already weak plan for reducing our province’s climate impact is about to take another hit as gas-fired generating stations are ramped up to deal with the impending closure of the Pickering Nuclear Station.
