Army, Texas A&M develop ‘Terminator’-style material that can ‘heal itself’

U.S. Army and Texas A&M researchers have developed a material that they say can “heal autonomously.” The 3-D printable and stimuli-responsive polymeric materials have fueled comparisons with the shapeshifting T-1000 Terminator character in the movie “Terminator 2: Judgement Day.” The materials could be used for morphing drones and robotic platforms, according to aerospace engineer Dr. Frank Gardea, who is the principal investigator of the project for the Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research laboratory.
