Ontario’s registered nurses are furious with the one-per-cent pay increase they just received. After all they have done during the COVID-19 pandemic, the phrase “slap in the face” summarizes their reaction, and nurses are flooding Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s office with emails, demanding that they be given a bigger raise. The Ontario Nurses Association says the issue is one of “equity, fairness and respect.” It’s not difficult to see why the nurses consider the one-per-cent raise to be paltry. It is. It’s also the amount the government has legislated as an annual increase for the broader public sector for three years.
