Canada’s unsuccessful bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council, losing to Norway and Ireland, is the swan song for our 70-year-old foreign policy. Canada’s foreign policy has traditionally promoted a rules-based international system, co-operation with multilateral institutions and positioned the country as a good international citizen. Although some differences existed between political parties, there was still a broad consensus that those priorities benefited Canada. This is not true anymore and those who still profess such priorities have failed to take stock of current events and the profound transformation in the international environment.
