The government was desperate to show skeptical Canadians that yes, they were indeed tough on crime. The Progressive Conservatives were still in favour of the death penalty — even today polls show a majority of Canadians want the ultimate punishment for our most heinous criminals. But the Liberals and NDP wanted it gone once and for all, even though it had been 14 years since the last two killers were hanged in this country at the Don Jail. In a narrow vote in the House of Commons in 1976, the death penalty was relegated to history in Canada for most crimes. Hanging for treason and other military crimes gasped its last breath in 1998.
