On Saturday, the 76th anniversary of D-Day, protesters demonstrating against police brutality and societal racism will march in Toronto. There were demonstrations on Friday in Ottawa where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “took a knee” with the protesters, as did Police Chief Mark Saunders in Toronto, in a gesture of respect. There will be more protests this weekend, across North America. Those who do so peacefully will be honouring the memory of the 359 Canadians who died on D-Day as they stormed ashore at Juno Beach in France on June 6, 1944.
