This guy sold three pounds of pot to a police informant 25 years ago. He’s still in jail for it — with 35 years to go

With the upheaval laid bare and emotions raw following George Floyd’s death, this may be the perfect time to talk about Michael Thompson, a black Michigan man who has been in prison for 25 years and could be there for 35 years more. Thompson is an uncomfortably familiar example of the cost of the U.S. war on drugs. He was convicted in 1994 for selling three pounds of cannabis to a police informant and sentenced to 42 to 60 years in prison. He has been in prison since 1996. A new twitter post, featuring a recording of a prepaid call and an accompanying artistic video, notes that Thompson has been imprisoned in Michigan’s Muskegon Correctional Facility for a quarter century. He is said to be eligible for parole when he reaches his late-80s, according to WNEM-TV.
