As businesses slowly re-open, some consumers may be surprised to see a COVID-19 surcharge tacked on to their bill. In the U.S., some restaurants have been adding on a small percentage charge to receipts as a way to offset the cost of buying personal protective equipment to allow for physical distancing rules as they re-open. A Japanese steakhouse in Missouri, for example, went viral last week when a patron noticed an extra $2.19 — or 5% of the $43.85 price of their bill — as a “COVID-19 surcharge.”
