Ontario hasn’t yet seen Asian giant hornets — or “murder hornets,” as the Internet has recently coined them — but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a possibility, say bee experts. The hornet, labelled by media as “death on wings,” is an invasive species, originating in Asia, but has made its way to the U.S. and Canada. The nickname comes from the way the AA-battery sized insects can slaughter entire colonies of honeybees, by decapitating them and consuming the thorax, so they can pilfer food from the hives and move it back to their colonies. They’ve also been linked to 50 human deaths a year.
