Canada has completed some 346,000 tests, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, announced at her daily briefing on Tuesday. Of that total, some five per cent were positive for COVID-19, or around 17,300 people. The national testing rate is one of the highest in the world, Tam notes. Yet we haven’t started planking our curve. Even more worrying is that outbreaks are occurring among those considered to be the most vulnerable to COVID-19: residents of long-term care centres and in Indigenous communities, where very limited access to medical care and underlying health conditions can cause an infection such as the coronavirus to spread with deadly speed. In Ontario, more than 50 long-term care facilities have reported outbreaks, and 850 residents and 69 staff have tested positive for COVID-19.
