Cochrane RCMP drop $1,200 social distancing tickets against two teens

Albertans shouldn’t expect the RCMP to start issuing tonnes of social distancing tickets just because they’re carpooling. On Thursday, a pair of Cochrane teens were issued $1,200 tickets for sitting in a car together. The tickets were issued under the province’s social distancing legislation, but by Friday afternoon they’d been thrown out by Cochrane RCMP. “A lot of times the government will come out with laws and it doesn’t necessarily mean the police should be rushing out and enforcing and writing tickets,” said Cochrane RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff. Anyone who is travelling in their vehicle with their family or co-workers will not be fined as long as they are not sick or under mandatory self-isolation.
