Public health officials in Ontario say between 3,000 and 15,000 could die in the province even with public health measures in place. Current measures show the province anticipates 1,600 deaths by the end of the month with current public heath measures. The 3,000 to 15,000 range depends on the actions of Ontarians. Officials say existing steps must stay in place to halt the spread of the pandemic and also called for stronger action. Gayle Smith tells The Canadian Press that she laments the Trump administration’s decision to disband a special office in the National Security Council to monitor global health threats. She says she thinks that has led to an “ad hoc” response to the COVID-19 outbreak by the U.S. government.
