The past few days have seen ever-increasing and severe measures brought in to restrict Canadians’ fundamental liberties. For the most part, those measures have been received with widespread support because we understand what is at stake. That support will only last for so long though, especially if the measures get stricter and more difficult to justify. Take the news on Wednesday that the City of Toronto closed public parks and said that anyone breaking the rule was subject to a fine. This doesn’t just cover gatherings at a baseball diamond or kids climbing on playground equipment. It also bans families from, say, playing soccer together while keeping their distance from other families.
