A new British study released Thursday finds that if no mitigating measures were taken in the wake of the novel coronavirus, 40 million people could have died from the virus. An analysis by researchers at Imperial College London in the U.K. estimated the scale of the potential spread of the virus in a variety of scenarios — from actively trying to stop the spread to doing nothing. And when in the “unmitigated scenario” where no measures were taken, what was labelled as the “unmitigated scenario,” the researchers found COVID-19 could have infected 7 billion people globally this year, with 40 million of them dying from it.
