The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and associated toilet paper shortage, is having a growing number of unwelcome side effects. Bluntly put: only the three Ps – pee, poop and (toilet) paper – should be flushed as Canadian municipalities report a “very significant upward spike” in clogs caused by wipes, paper towels and even facial tissues. Sewer systems are built to handle human waste and toilet paper that is made to break down quickly, the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association warns. Anything else put down a toilet or sink causes problems can cause clogs, blockages and equipment damage, any of which can shut down sewer systems.
