It’s the end of the weekend as we know it

In other words, it’s been about a week since the weekend meant something; a week since North Americans woke up to the knowledge that COVID-19 isn’t a story somewhere over there, but the only story here and everywhere. Today is Friday and for the first time in a very long time that means nothing to millions on this continent. For the foreseeable future, TGIF is dead. It means nothing to those who have been laid off as a result of the virus; whose Tuesdays will henceforth be unrecognizable from their Saturdays. But for everyone who does the right thing, for everyone who practises social distancing, it will be a long time before we ask each other — in earnest — a question we didn’t know we took for granted: “what are you doing this weekend?”
