Consider it a partial refund. The Ontario government is going to offer parents affected by the ongoing one-day strikes at Ontario schools up to $60 a day, per child, to offset child-care costs. How much each parent will get depends on the age of their children and other factors, but the money is a refund of sorts. Government officials tell me that if every parent were to take them up on their offer, and many will not, it would cost them $48 million if all the boards were dealing with a strike. The salary savings from not paying teachers on those same strike days… $60 million per day.
